RENAS Partners with Terravera to Strengthen Resource Management

What happens to the resources behind the electronics we use every day? RENAS is working with Terravera to better understand where critical raw materials come from, the environmental impacts associated with extracting them, and how this knowledge can support smarter decisions throughout a product’s lifecycle.

Understanding the Environmental Impact of Critical Raw Materials

RENAS engaged Terravera to gain a clear understanding of the environmental impact associated with extracting the critical raw materials and metals used in today’s electronics. They believe that this information will enable better, more informed decision-making, helping RENAS and its members identify where their efforts can make a meaningful difference in transitioning toward a more resource-efficient economy.

RENAS is Norway’s leading Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), specializing in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and batteries. With nearly 2,500 members nationwide, RENAS is committed to helping its members shift from merely managing waste to recycling, reuse and recover materials in producing new products.

Turning data into decisions

The next step is to explore how these insights can create value for RENAS’s member organizations. The Terravera mapping will be implemented across RENAS’s member organizations to gain practical insights into how this analysis can support more sustainable decision-making processes.

Over time, RENAS hopes to foster a broader conversation among its members, where material risks, environmental impacts, and product lifespan are considered alongside price and regulatory compliance.

CEO Bjørn Arild Thon and Head of Marketing Katarina J. Haugersveen at RENAS are excited about the opportunities Terravera’s work has given them.

Making more competent decisions

RENAS’s ambition is for the insights developed with Terravera to be directly applied in decisions related to procurement, product development, repair, reuse, and resource management.

The goal is not simply to provide more data to our companies but to help them ask better questions and make more competent decisions.
— Katarina J. Haugersveen, Head of Marketing

A valuable collaboration

RENAS has greatly appreciated the experience of collaborating with Terravera modeller Marius Andersen. Marius has been pragmatic and readily available throughout the partnership, while also challenging RENAS to explore new directions and perspectives, especially in understanding and mapping resource availability and environmental impact.
